University of Glasgow 575 Anniversary Plate

  • Make a Selection

A very special plate, commissioned by the University of Glasgow to celebrate the 575th anniversary of its founding in 1451.

The design is inspired by a plate made in Bell's Pottery factory in Glasgow, 'Peacocks & Lillies 1887'. The original is now held in the Hunterian Collection.

Design elements on the 575 plate include: the Cloisters; the Lion and Unicorn from the Old College staircase; the University's resident peregrine falcons, Bonnie and Clyde; the Hourglass from the Blackstone Chair; the Mackintosh Rose and the Glasgow Style; a fleet of graduation teddy bears; the windows of the Gilbert Scott Building, and the University of Glasgow crest.

The Colleges of Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Arts and Humanities, and Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences are each represented by their own distinct pattern. The Peacock & Lillies pattern from the older Bell's Pottery plate is also featured.

The making of this plate has helped to rekindle a historic connection between the cities of Glasgow and Stoke-on-Trent, creating a new chapter in their shared clay story.
