A quaich is a special kind of shallow two-handled drinking cup or bowl in Scotland. The word derives from the Scottish Gaelic 'cuach' meaning a cup. They are often used in ceremonial occasions, particularly to signify friendship or co-operation. This includes weddings where they are increasingly used in the ceremony. The tradition dates back to James VI, who gave a 'loving cup' to Anne of Denmark in 1589.
Quaichs are also given as awards and prizes, or to recognise significant events and achievements such as graduations.
