Stage & Screen: Designs from the James L Gordon Collection

To accompany the exhibition Stage & Screen: Designs from the James L Gordon Collection at the Hunterian Art Gallery, copies of the catalogue are now available online and in the Art Gallery Shop on campus.

This visually engaging exhibition offers a glimpse into a unique personal collection of 20th-century theatre designs. Presented chronologically, the rich and diverse material surveys a century of British theatre design from 1900–2000. Featuring both set and costume designs for theatre and film, Stage and Screen also includes significant items with links to Glasgow and Scotland.

As well as set designs by artists such as Patrick Caulfield, Edward Burra, Paul Nash and Rex Whistler, the exhibition also features costume designs for performers and musicians, often identifiable by the inscriptions or drawings, including Liza Minelli, Elton John, The Jackson Five, Mick Jagger and The Beatles.

The catalogue features a biographical introduction to Gordon and the collection by curator Joseph Sharples, along with over 40 pages of full-colour images of selected works. Click here to purchase via the web store, or here to read more about the exhibition.
