Scottish tartans are world famous and recognised as a symbol of allegiance to a clan - a group with a shared ancestral or geographical heritage. The University of Glasgow tartan continues this tradition and features the colours of our crest.

The traditional Scottish cap, bonnet or Tam O'Shanter is an essential item for the wardrobe of fighting Scots and teuchters (Highlanders), and for Hollywood portrayals of Scottish life! It can be worn by men or women.

Made especially for the University of Glasgow by Lochcarron of Scotland, this is the real deal, finished in soft fabric with a roomy fit and topped with a toorie, or pom-pom.

The name Tam O'Shanter comes from the eponymous hero of the Robert Burns poem, but the hat shape has been around since the 15th century (back when the University was founded). Known in military circles as the Tam or TOS, it was first worn by Scottish soldiers in 1915 and is still part of uniform for regiments in Scotland and Canada today.
