Mary Queen of Scots Tea Towel

  • Make a Selection

Limited edition tea towel specially designed for the Hunterian Art Gallery exhibition The Afterlife of Mary, Queen of Scots.

The image is based on a portrait by Francois Clouet, painted around the time of Mary's marriage to the Dauphin of France (the future Francis II) in 1558. Mary became Queen of France when Francis was crowned in 1559, but he died less than a year later and Mary returned to Scotland.

The words "In my end is my beginning" appear below the image on the front. This is the saying which Mary embroidered on her cloth of estate whilst imprisoned in England and is the theme running through her life.

Quote on reverse reads: "To be kind to all, to like many and to love a few, to be needed and wanted by those we love, is certainly the nearest we can come to happiness."
