GIFA Poster Tile Coaster

£ 5.99

A beautifull glazed ceramic tile featuring a detail from a Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts poster by Margaret Macdonald, Frances Macdonald and James McNair. Most often used as a drinks coaster, but also a beautiful display object for a mantelpiece or shelf.

Made in the North East of England by a small tile specialist.

In the mid 1890s, the Macdonald sisters, McNair and Mackintosh - collectively the Group of Four - produced a small group of posters that encapsulated their preoccupations with stylized forms and lettering. These were worked into bold compositions, often with a symbolic meaning. The posters successfully promoted their subjects and also publicly signaled the arrival of a distinctive new design group. Copies of these posters are held in the Hunterian collections with some displayed in the Mackintosh House.
